THE PLACE OF THE PALM TREE

“The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them, and the desert shall rejoice and blossom as the rose” (Isa. xxxv. 1).

HE palm tree grows in the desert.  Travelers tell us that on the slopes of the Atlas Mountains, where no other vegetation is found and no grain or fruit tree can grow because of the scorching suns and barren sands, there are groves of beautiful palms.  So the Christian is planted in the desert.  Our surroundings are often most uncongenial, but it is just in such places that we can most glorify our Lord.  As the lighthouse that shines only in the darkness so we, on the dark and dangerous shores of time, are called in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation to shine as lights in the world holding forth the Word of life.
